Atheist sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia

A man in Saudi Arabia has reportedly been sentenced to death on charges of apostasy after losing two appeals.
Several local media reports identified the man as Ahmad Al Shamri, in his 20s, from the town of Hafar al-Batin, who first came to the authorities’ attention in 2014 after allegedly uploading videos to social media in which he renounced Islam and the Prophet Mohammed.
He was arrested on charges of atheism and blasphemy and held in prison before being convicted by a local court and sentenced to death in February 2015.

Religion sometimes has some difficult issues to account for. Some inexcusable atrocities.

It is not so much to do with religion but those who misuse it for their own secular interests, i.e., their power over others. Apostasy is a serious breach of Islamic law although the prescribed penalty of death is largely ignored throughout the Muslim world.
It is in Saudi Arabia where Wahabism holds sway. It inspires the savage hordes of ISIS with its fondness for cruelty. As such, it should be eliminated in order that true Islam shines through all that. In Islam, mercy is essential as a reflection of Allah's nature. He is benevolent and merciful and so His followers should emulate those virtues. I fail to see this being exercised in the KSA.
I should add that the Holy Qur'an instructs us that the more severe penalties should be carried out reluctantly and with the intention of avoiding them altogether. Mercy being the prime motivation.
