In East Germany, the unemployment rate was really low. Same can be said about the crime rate.
Free medicine and free education.
No need to save for retirement as there were government guaranteed pensions.
Overall, the idea of DDR was good, even Utopian.
European Socialism could achieve the same.

Hence the growing appeal of nostalgia for the DDR ... known in Eastern Germany as Ostnostalgie.

I think the DDR's greatest virtue was that it maintained a strong German (Prussian) identity whereas the Federal Republic became Americanised.

They treated former members of the NVA shabbily. Former soldiers of the DDR were treated as members of an "enemy army". They were denied all pension rights.

It was socialist and the West hated it for that.
